Senior
Advocate Dushyant Dave, a prominent and respected figure in India’s legal
fraternity, has announced his decision to retire from legal practice at the age
of 70. With a distinguished career spanning 48 years, Dave’s departure marks
the end of a significant chapter in the Indian judiciary. He stated that he now
wishes to devote his time to society, pursue personal interests such as reading
and travelling, and most importantly, spend more time with his family.
Reflecting
on his nearly five-decade-long journey in the legal profession, Dave expressed
deep gratitude for the unwavering support he received from colleagues at the
Bar, judges on the Bench, and his clients. He emphasized that throughout his
career, he tried to serve his clients with utmost dedication—whether it was
through paid engagements or pro bono work. Dave said he had always strived to
ensure justice for those who needed it most and considered it a privilege to
have been a part of this noble profession.
Widely
regarded for his unwavering commitment to constitutional values, particularly
personal liberty and secularism. Dave never shied away from voicing bold and
critical opinions about the Indian judiciary. He served as the President of the
Supreme Court Bar Association and was known for challenging institutional
complacency. In a widely discussed interview with LiveLaw
in 2024, Dave had
sharply criticized the judiciary’s reluctance to stand up against executive
overreach. He had remarked that the judiciary was at “its weakest in modern
Indian history.” Similarly, in an earlier interview in 2022, he openly
discussed the various issues plaguing the judicial system and offered
reform-oriented suggestions, underscoring his deep concern for the future of
judicial independence and integrity.
In his
farewell message, Dave shared that he had enjoyed the journey of being a lawyer
immensely and was proud of the contributions he had made to the legal system
and the pursuit of justice. He hoped that future generations of lawyers and
judges would continue to uphold the rule of law and work toward delivering
justice swiftly and fairly. He expressed confidence that the legal profession
would continue to serve the democratic fabric of the nation with renewed vigour
and commitment.
Dave
also took a moment to thank his colleagues, clients, and personal staff,
acknowledging their honesty, support, and hard work over the years. Looking
ahead, he stated that he intends to work for the betterment of society in his
own way and embrace the joys of personal life, particularly spending quality
time with his wife Ami, whom he called a steadfast partner throughout his
career, his daughter Shimauli and her husband Gaurav, his son Nimay and his
wife Prachi, and his four grandchildren, Jia, Maisha, Tara, and Samar. He concluded
his message by bidding farewell to his friends in the Bar and on the Bench,
stating that he was leaving the legal profession with a sense of pride and
fulfillment.
